What's the deal with Coded UI tests in VS2010?

So I was intrigued as to what was in VS2010 from an automated UI testing perspective, I'll be looking into this in more detail but some of the specs look pretty good. It’s great to hear that it is going to have some silverlight support but I think we are going to have to wait till closer to RTM to find out what support for which types of apps actually make it in.

This video http://videos.visitmix.com/MIX09/T83M shows the proposed platform support but there are a few “Best efforts” statements nevertheless, Brian Keller demos the Coded UI testing functionality.

It looks like it is going to be really powerful with some great features like the “Video Recorder” which could change the face (and size) of execution logs forever!

We are going to be installing the Beta here at nFocus to see what the little nuances are and we will report back on our findings.

Beta 2 is great, we are working with it right now and I am going to be blogging about it in the comming months. Finally I have a set of test tools from MS that I can work with and be productive,Gr8 news :)

Hi,

I have a question which I was hoping you could assist with.
To run automation tests against a .net application will I need additional automation tools? I.e. can I use VS2010 to both build and run the automation test scripts? Keep us posted with your views on the product.

Many thanks,

Dan

Hi DanAsk, yes, you can use VS2010 to build and run tests with no need for additional tools. The one caveat is that this is dependent on the technology of the system you are testing, there is a full list of supported apps and browsers here : http://blogs.msdn.com/anutthara/archive/2010/01/14/what-apps-browsers-does-coded-ui-test-work-on.aspx
